The "Mama Africa" Miriam Makeba South African singer Miriam Makeba, icon of the struggle against apartheid, was crowned posthumously "legend" of the music of the continent. "Makeba is a true legend and rightly celebrated throughout the world for his beautiful voice, his fighting spirit and pioneering interpretation of African music," commented Alex Okosi, director of MTV Africa, the award "Mama Legend".
Died in November 2008 at the age of 76 years, Makeba, known as "Mama Africa", had received grammy voting a Grammy Award in 1965 but his music was then banned in South Africa by the white South African regime, after its appearance in a anti-apartheid film.
