The big names of Hollywood and movie lovers alike are waiting to see the outcome of the 86th Annual Academy Awards show, popularly known as The Oscars, on March 2nd. One of the big Latino names of the night is Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, whose film “Gravity” leads the pack with 10 nods. However, Cuaron is not the only Latino movie director who has received such recognition by the Academy award winning movies 2011 Awards.
Since the 1960s, Latino movie directors ranging from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba and Puerto Rico have been nominated for categories such as Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary Feature and Best Animated Feature.
As the anticipating Oscars approaches, we introduce four Latino movie directors whose work has been acknowledged by the reputed awards show with the nod of Best Director. Camaras, luces y accion! Alfonso Cuaron “Gravity”
Mexican director, Alfonso Cuaron, gained high esteem in the industry with his latest film, “Gravity.” The 3-D space odyssey starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney earned Cuaron the 2013 Golden Globe for Best Director. He hopes to take the same title at the 2014 Academy Awards show .
He was nominated for Best Writing, Original Screenplay “Y Tu Mamá También” in 2003 and again in 2007 for Best Writing, Adapted award winning movies 2011 Screenplay “Children of Men.” Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu “Babel”
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, 50, is another famous Mexican director known for his feature films “Amores Perros,” “21 Grams,” “Babel” and “Biutiful,” which have all been nominated at The Oscars.
The 58-year-old also directed “The Constant Gardener” in 2005, which took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress to Rachel Weisz. Hector Babenco “Kiss of the Spider Woman”
The film was also nominated for Best Picture, it was the first Latin-American and Brazilian film nominated in that category. The 68-year-old has worked in several countries including Argentina, Brazil and the United States.
